What you are when you follow Jesus

What is life like under the authority of God in a fallen world?

What does it look like to operate in the kingdom of God (being under God’s Authority) in your marriage?

Matthew 5:3-11 is AWESOME marriage counseling…actually, the entire bible is, but it’s good to look at this passage in terms of our marriages.

What does it mean for YOU to be in the kingdom of God (being under God’s authority) in our marriages?

You will be poor in spirit
Jesus came to heal the sick. If you will humbly recognize that only God can save your marriage, not circumstances, finances…not even true love! Perfect love can never exist between two sinners…submit to God.

You will mourn
You will mourn or suffer in your marriage. See this as a tool to bring you closer to God, not an excuse to bail on your marriage and search for the greener grass somewhere else. God’s will on earth as it is in heaven is not an overnight process. It takes generations of time.

You will be meek
Don’t seek to be the “alpha dog” in your marriage, but listen to your wife, lose to your wife, turn the other cheek to your wife…complete humility in your marriage.

You will thirst for righteousness
We hunger and thirst because we have tasted the world and find it lacking. We know it’s broken and we search for a better life. We know that we need God to intervene..”Seek first the kingdom of God”, as Jesus said.

You will show mercy
Forgive your wife 77 times, showing mercy daily.

Your heart will become pure
You will reject/hate all things that pollute your heart – anger, bitterness, etc. And you will more easily recognize the traps of Satan.

You will make peace
Reconcile with your wife daily.

You will be insulted and persecuted because of Jesus and your reward will be in heaven… (p
People around you – including your spouse – may not like that you follow Jesus’ ways. But you become poor in spirit, you mourn, you are meek, you thirst for righteousness, you show mercy, your heart becomes pure, and you make peace not to gain favor from your wife (or anyone else), but to be closer to God.

Jesus’ Challenge

Anyone who both hears my words and practices them will be like a man who built his house on the rock. When the storms came, the house did not fall.

Build our marriages on the ROCK!
